Years of Building Expertise

The first step in becoming an MD (Medical Doctor) or a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) is completing basic medical education. People interested in this career must earn a four-year undergraduate degree with an emphasis on science courses.

They should also finish a residency program, which is typically two to six years of additional training. By this time, aspiring MDs and DOs will have the necessary skills to practice in specialty areas like family medicine, psychiatry, surgery, or obstetrics.

Finally, both MDs and DOs must pass comparable or even identical state licensing examinations. Once they do, they can start practicing in fully accredited and licensed hospitals and medical centers.
